Maryland, constituent state of the United States of America. One of the original 13 states, it
lies at the centre of the Eastern Seaboard, amid the great commercial and population complex
that stretches from Maine to Virginia. Its small size belies the great diversity of its landscapes
and of the ways of life that they foster, from the low-lying and water-oriented Eastern Shore
and Chesapeake Bay area, through the metropolitan hurly-burly of Baltimore, its largest city,
to the forested Appalachian foothills and mountains of its western reaches.


Baltimore, city, north-central Maryland, U.S., about 40 miles (65 km) northeast of Washington,
D.C. It lies at the head of the Patapsco River estuary, 15 miles (25 km) above Chesapeake Bay.
Baltimore is Maryland’s largest city and economic centre and constitutes the northeastern hub
of the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. The city, separated from Baltimore county in

Baltimore was established in 1729 and named for the Irish barony of Baltimore (seat of the
Calvert family, proprietors of the colony of Maryland). It was created as a port for shipping
tobacco and grain, and soon local waterways were being harnessed for flour milling. Baltimore

Canton & Brewers Hill. The heart of this waterfront neighborhood is a quaint village square
rimmed with restaurants, pubs and shops along O’Donnell Street. But wander off the square
to the surrounding blocks and find the quintessential Baltimore, from the nearly-lost Baltimore
art form of the painted screen to rows of classic marble stoops on traditional Baltimore brick
and Formstone row houses. Canton Waterfront Park is a hot spot for events like WTMD’s First
Thursdays, an outdoor summer concert series, and the annual Baltimore Seafood Festival.


Druid Hill Park. The Rawlings Conservatory. Dating back to 1860, Druid Hill Park is a 745-
acre urban oasis located in the heart of Baltimore. Today, it’s home to several attractions
including a public pool, disc golf courses, tennis courts, The Maryland Zoo and the Howard
Peters Rawlings Conservatory and Botanic Gardens. Friends of Druid Hill Park frequently
schedule events to encourage use and enjoyment of the grounds including a farmers market,
guided walking and biking tours, night hikes, live entertainment and outdoor fitness classes.

experience in big-tech, academia, and local government to transform how the city of Baltimore
uses data to modernize government operations and deliver critical city services.


BALTIMORE, MD (Friday, August 16, 2024) - Today, signaling continued success in their
ongoing opioid litigation, Mayor Brandon M. Scott and the City of Baltimore announced
they have reached a $152.5 million settlement with Cardinal Health to resolve the City's
claims against Cardinal related to its role in fueling the worst opioid epidemic in the nation.
Cardinal will pay the entire $152.5 million settlement amount this year. The settlement
follows the Baltimore City Circuit Court's rulings yesterday that allowed the City's case to
proceed to trial.

WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 14-111 of the Public Safety Article of the Annotated. Code of
Maryland the Mayor is authorized to declare a local state of emergency; WHEREAS, the Francis
Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed early this morning after being struck by a container ship
resulting in active search and rescue efforts, structural damage and other consequences;
WHEREAS, measures must be taken to protect the persons affected by these circumstances
and to address the structural and transportation effects, including implementation of the
relevant parts of Baltimore City’s emergency operations plan.


Historically, careers in government— whether federal, state, or the local sector—have been a
springboard for economic mobility and stability for Black families. Public service careers
have not only offered job security, but access to livable wages, healthcare, retirement, and
homeownership. With this in mind, Mayor Scott partnered with Baltimore’s local HBCUs to
create a fellowship program designed to connect recent graduates with careers in local
government.

Mayor Brandon M. Scott announced a partnership with Baltimore Corp and Baltimore’s two
Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Coppin State University and Morgan
State University, to launch the Mayor’s HBCU Fellowship Initiative. The $4 million ARPA-
funded HBCU Fellowship Initiative is designed to create a pipeline for HBCU graduates to
